SAMOA UP20 diaphragm pumps improve efficiency in roof tile manufacturing

A leading roof tile manufacturer in Sweden required a reliable pumping solution to improve the dosing of colour agents and additives in its concrete roof tile production process.

Air-operated diaphragm pumps are commonly used in this application to transfer iron oxide mixed with water, which gives concrete tiles their characteristic red colour. In addition, carbon black is introduced into the mix to enhance both thermal conductivity and mechanical strength.

The pumps previously installed on the production line caused excessive pulsation, vibration, high air consumption, and elevated noise levels—negatively impacting process stability and operating efficiency. The customer therefore sought a solution that would improve performance while reducing energy and maintenance concerns.

Challenges to Overcome

• Reduce pulsation and vibration during the colour dosing process

• Lower compressed air consumption

• Decrease overall sound levels in the production area

Project Approach

After evaluating the application requirements, the local distributor recommended a 2” SAMOA Pivot Series air-operated diaphragm pump, manufactured in aluminium and fitted with Hytrel balls and diaphragms (model UP20A-BAC-HHC) from SAMOA.

The Pivot Series diaphragm pumps feature an innovative Frictionless Pivot-Shaft Air Valve, a patented design with only one moving part—a pivoting rod with sealing pads—that eliminates sliding components and dynamic seals found in traditional air valves. This frictionless mechanism enables the fastest reciprocating action in the industry, delivering rapid, smooth changeovers between pump strokes. The result is higher and more consistent fluid flow with dramatically reduced pulsation and vibration—critical for maintaining uniform colour distribution in tile manufacturing.

The air valve’s quick-shifting capability, combined with oversized air exhaust passages and a patented Smooth Start Shifter (3S) actuator, significantly lowers compressed air consumption compared to competitive pumps. By minimizing dead zones, preventing stalls or icing even at low pressures, and optimizing air usage during operation, the design achieves maximum fluid flow with reduced air consumption—often translating to noticeable energy savings and lower operational costs. Additionally, the short, oversized exhaust passages eliminate whistle noise, contributing to quieter operation while further reducing vibration.

The Solution and Results

By installing the SAMOA Pivot Series diaphragm pump, the manufacturer achieved measurable improvements across the process. Sound levels during colour feeding were noticeably reduced, creating a quieter and more comfortable working environment. Pulsation and vibration were significantly minimised, improving process stability and colour consistency.

The high efficiency of the patented Frictionless Pivot-Shaft Air Valve delivered a clear reduction in compressed air consumption, enabling the customer to achieve lower energy costs, enhanced overall energy performance, and reduced strain on the compressed air system—benefits that directly support sustainable manufacturing goals.
