According to information from the National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS), inspections conducted across the country have revealed that refurbished geysers do not comply with VC 9006, the compulsory specification for hot water storage tanks. None of these products have a valid Letter of Authority, which is required for products to be legally traded in the South African market.

The sale and use of non-compliant geysers can expose consumers to a range of serious hazards, including:

• Explosion risks

• Water leaks from the geyser shell

• Acid exposure, as some refurbished geysers may be acid washed

• Compromised water quality due to the use of acid

• Electric shock

• Tampered insulation, which can increase electricity consumption and household bills. In many cases, geysers are replaced because the internal shell has started leaking, often after years of use. Attempting to repair or re-weld a leaking geyser shell does not automatically make it safe for resale. Before any such product could be offered to consumers again, it would need to undergo full safety testing and comply with all compulsory regulatory requirements.

• Is installed by a qualified professional
