Integrated Wastewater Solutions Target Africa’s Treatment Challenges

South Africa’s struggling wastewater treatment sector is creating growing demand for reliable technologies and experienced technical support as municipalities and industrial operators seek to improve plant performance and meet increasingly stringent environmental requirements.

“A significant number of wastewater treatment plants are underperforming and there is a real need for upgrades, refurbishment projects and improved operational efficiency.” The consequences of poorly functioning wastewater treatment facilities extend far beyond the plant boundary. Untreated or inadequately treated wastewater can contaminate water resources, create environmental damage and pose serious public health risks. Aeration remains one of the most critical processes within wastewater treatment.
The process introduces oxygen into wastewater, enabling bacteria to break down organic matter as part of the purification process. When aeration systems are poorly designed, incorrectly sized or inadequately maintained, plant performance can deteriorate rapidly. Addressing the skills and performance gap Burn believes one of the biggest challenges facing the sector is the loss of technical expertise that has occurred over many years.
“There has been a significant brain drain locallly. While there are still capable engineers entering the industry, many of the experienced specialists who spent decades designing and optimising these systems are no longer available. You can have someone who understands the calculations, but practical experience is equally important.” According to Burn, mistakes in equipment selection, sizing or system design can have severe consequences for plant performance and can ultimately cost operators millions of rand.
The partnership between SSI and Robuschi aims to address this challenge by providing customers with access to both proven technology and technical expertise. Traditionally, explains Burn, project teams may have sourced blowers from one supplier and aeration systems from another, creating situations where responsibility becomes fragmented and communication between suppliers is limited. “Customers often find themselves dealing with multiple suppliers, each responsible for only part of the process,” says Burn.
“Our objective is to provide a more holistic solution where the technologies work together and the customer has access to the necessary support throughout the project.” SSI brings decades of research and development experience in aeration technology to the partnership. The company has invested heavily in optimising diffuser performance and aeration efficiency, while Robuschi has built a reputation over many decades for reliable blower technology.
“SSI has spent years refining and improving aeration performance, while Robuschi is a legacy brand that has been manufacturing blowers since 1941. Both companies bring strong technical credentials and proven products to the market,” says Burn. Local support key to long-term success Beyond the products themselves, technical support and after-sales service remain critical factors in wastewater treatment applications. Large biological treatment plants rely on carefully balanced processes involving live bacterial populations. Equipment failures or extended downtime can have significant operational consequences.
“If something goes wrong in a wastewater treatment plant, it can take months for biological processes to recover fully,” says Burn. “That’s why reliability, rapid support and access to spare parts are so important.” To support customers, Air & Vacuum Technologies maintains local stock holdings and places significant emphasis on technical assistance before, during and after installation. According to Burn, local availability is often a decisive factor in project success.
“Stockholding is extremely important in South Africa. Customers need quick turnaround times and fast access to components when required. Without that capability, it becomes very difficult to support projects effectively.” The company is also increasingly assisting consulting engineers and engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractors during the design phase of projects. “We often work closely with consulting engineers during feasibility studies and specification development.
In many cases we can provide guidance based on practical experience that helps optimise the final design.” While South Africa remains an important market, Burn says growth opportunities are increasingly being sought elsewhere on the continent. The company has seen growing demand from countries including Ghana, Nigeria and Kenya, reflecting broader infrastructure development and investment trends across Africa.
“We are seeing strong opportunities across the continent in both municipal and industrial applications.
